Sports Unit organises fitness programme to promote healthy living

The Sports Unit of the University of Ilorin has organised a fitness programme aimed at promoting health and wellness among the University community.

The event, organised in collaboration with the Exercise is Medicine Club, a student fitness club, took place penultimate Saturday, (January 18, 2025) at the Main Bowl of the University Stadium. It drew participants from across the campus.

In a chat with UNILORIN Bulletin on the sidelines of the programme, the Director of the University Sports Unit, Prof. T.O. Ibraheem, highlighted the objectives of the programme, which included fostering physical, mental, social, and emotional well-being through regular exercises.

Prof. Ibraheem said, “Exercise is medicine. It’s not just drugs that enhance healthy living. Many doctors recommend physical activity for their patients. Move more, live more.”

The Director pointed out that regular exercises contribute to an increased lifespan and called on staff and students who missed the event to integrate physical activities into their routines.

 He reminded members of the University community of the designated sports hour every Wednesday from 4.00 p.m. to 6.00 p.m., saying that it is open to all and at no cost.

Prof. Ibraheem also expressed gratitude to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, for his continuous support for the Sports Unit through the provision of necessary facilities.

On her part, the Chairman of the University Sports Council, Prof. Omodele Eletta, urged members of the University community to prioritise their health amidst their busy schedules. “Exercise is fun,” she said, encouraging participants to find joy in staying active.

Also in her remarks, the immediate past Director of Sports and Matron of the Exercise is Medicine Club, Prof. O.L. Dominic, reiterated the importance of regular exercises as a key to maintaining good health and looking youthful.

 According to her, “The human body is meant for movement, not prolonged inactivity. Many people now rely on machines even for domestic tasks, but physical activity is essential.”
