50th Anniversary: Egbewole assures Geography Dept of support

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has assured the Department of Geography and Environmental Management of the University of his support for its 50th anniversary celebration scheduled for October 2026.
Prof. Egbewole gave the assurance penultimate Wednesday (August 19, 2026) when the leadership of the Department paid him a courtesy visit to formally inform him of its intention to commemorate the milestone.
Receiving the delegation, the Vice Chancellor congratulated them on the significant achievement, which marks five decades of academic excellence, teaching and research, community engagement, and contributions to national development.
He advised the Department to ensure that the anniversary celebration becomes a landmark event with meaningful and lasting impact on the present and future generations of geographers, rather than merely being a celebration of the Department’s 50 years of existence.
Earlier in her remarks, the Ag. Head of the Department, Dr Toluwalope Mubo Agaja, disclosed that the Department will be 50 years old in October 2026.
She said the celebration is expected to bring together the University Management, members of the Department, distinguished alumni, students, academics, government representatives, private-sector stakeholders, and other friends of the Department.
Dr Agaja added that a major component of the celebration will be a Public Lecture and Alumni Summit, which will provide an opportunity to reflect on the evolution of Geography, its contemporary relevance, and its contribution to addressing emerging societal and environmental challenges.
Members of the delegation included the Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, Prof. Abubakar Muhammad; Profs. R. A. Olawepo, L. T. Ajibade, I. P. Ifabiyi, U. A. Raheem, and K. A. Iroye (Chairman, Planning Committee); the Sub-Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, Dr Adebiyi; and Mrs F. M. Shittu (Secretary, Planning Committee).
