It was a moment of pride for the University of Ilorin as two of its distinguished staff members were honoured at the YOMAFA Global Awards Season 18.
The grand ceremony, held penultimate Saturday, (October 3, 2026), at the Martino Events Centre and Hotels, Ikeja, Lagos, saw an Associate Professor at the Centre for Peace and Strategic Studies, Dr Ruth Abiola Adimula, and the General Manager of UNILORIN 89.3 FM, Mr Ibrahim Akintola Idris (Alooma), bagging the prestigious YOMAFA Award of Excellence.
Founded in 2007, YOMAFA, which stands for Year of Merit Awards for Foremost Achievers, is a prominent African and global broadcasting, media production and awards platform based in Lagos.
The event, hosted by Aare Tomori Williams with Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu as Chief Host, celebrates exceptional achievers across government, business, academia, media and other sectors.
Dr Adimula was recognised for her distinguished contributions to peace-building, scholarship and humanity. A Commonwealth Scholar, and Federal Commissioner on Taxation, Dr Adimula has remained at the forefront of advocacy for women’s rights, children’s welfare and peace in the society.
Mr Alooma, a veteran journalist with over three decades of practice, was honoured for the second consecutive edition and subsequently elevated to the rank of YOMAFA Global Ambassador. The elevation was in recognition of his consistency, high reputation and immense contributions to the growth of the broadcasting industry and national development.
In her response, Dr Adimula expressed joy over the recognition and dedicated the award to Almighty God and to the University of Ilorin.
On his part, Mr Alooma appreciated the organisers for the honour, noting that the reward for hard work is more work, while reaffirming his commitment to continue contributing to national development through his professional calling.
Meanwhile, the Director of Corporate Affairs, University of Ilorin, Mr Kunle Akogun, has congratulated the duo, describing the honours as well-deserved and a reflection of the University’s culture of excellence.
Mr Akogun said that Dr Adimula and Mr Alooma are shining examples of what UNILORIN stands for: intellectual depth, professional integrity and service to humanity.
According to him, “Dr Adimula has distinguished herself as a scholar of global repute and a passionate advocate for peace and justice, while Mr Alooma has redefined campus broadcasting with uncommon professionalism and credibility.”
He, however, noted that their recognition at the YOMAFA Global Awards is not just a personal achievement, but a collective pride for the entire University community. “As the image maker of the University, I am proud that our staff continue to project the University positively on the global stage,” Mr Akogun remarked.
