The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has called on the Nigerian Army to consider establishing a laboratory within the University to further deepen institutional collaboration.
Prof. Egbewole made this appeal last Monday (February 23, 2026) while receiving a delegation from the Nigerian Army Institute of Science Education and Technology (NAISET), Sobi Cantonment, Ilorin, led by the new the Acting Commandant of NAISET, Colonel Abass Ahmed Abubakar. The new Commandant was on a familiarisation visit to the Vice Chancellor.
Represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research, Technology and Innovation), Prof. Muhtar Adeiza Etudaiye, the Vice Chancellor described the Nigerian Army as a well-respected institution within the University community, noting that the University values its enduring partnership with the military.
While saying that the relationship between the University and the Nigerian Army has remained symbiotic and mutually beneficial over the years, particularly in the area of campus security support, the Vice Chancellor said the Army has been helpful in addressing some of the security challenges of the University.
Prof. Egbewole urged that the existing collaboration be escalated to a higher level, pointing out that the University already hosts an Air Force laboratory on campus and expressing optimism that the Nigerian Army would also establish a similar facility to encourage deeper mutual engagement.
Earlier, in his remarks, Colonel Abubakar said the visit was to strengthen the relationship and collaboration between the Institute and the University as well as to appreciate the sustained support of the institution.
He commended the University for training officers and men of the Institute in various programmes, including Executive Management Courses, Library and Information Science, and other professional courses.
According to him, the Institute deliberately sponsors its personnel to undertake courses at the University because of the quality of training, which, he said, had enhanced their capacity to effectively discharge their responsibility of providing security in the country.
Colonel Abubakar appreciated the management of the University, the Vice Chancellor, and the Centre for Peace and Strategic Studies (CPSS) for their continued cooperation.
He particularly thanked the University Librarian for granting officers and soldiers access to the University Library for practical training, noting that he was personally one of the beneficiaries of the gesture.
