By Temitope Omoniyi

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Egbewole, SAN, has assured the institution’s Quiz, Debate, and Innovation Committee of continued support for initiatives that enhance the competitiveness of Nigerian students globally.

Prof. Egbewole stated this last Wednesday (September 10, 2025) while receiving members of the Committee and victorious students at the just-concluded All-Nigeria Universities Debating Championship, led by the Chairman, University Quiz, Debate, and Innovation Committee, Prof. Oluyinka Iyiola.

The University emerged as champions in Public Speaking and winners of the Novice Debate categories of the 12th All-Nigeria Universities Debating Championship (ANUDC).

The Vice-Chancellor commended the students who represented the University for “making us proud” and assured them that they would always be supported.

Earlier, the President and Chairman of the All-Nigeria Universities Debating Council (ANUDC), Dr. Abdullateef Owoade, commended the Vice-Chancellor and the University management for saving the 12th edition of the Championship from postponement.

He noted that the Championship, held from August 24 to 30, 2025, had initially faced uncertainty after the original host institution withdrew a few weeks to the commencement date.

Dr. Owoade, joined by the General Secretary of the All-Nigeria Universities Debating Council, Ahmed Abiodun Lawal, said that the University of Ilorin accepted the hosting rights at a short notice and swiftly mobilised resources to ensure the success of the tournament.

The Chairman of the University Quiz, Debate, and Innovation Committee, Prof. Oluyinka Iyiola, thanked the Vice-Chancellor for the trust invested in the team and assured him that they would continue to excel.

Also speaking, the outgoing President of the University of Ilorin Debating Community, Alexander Olafisoye, assured the Vice-Chancellor that the team would always make the university proud.

Olafisoye, a champion at the 2023 AfCFTA African Youth Trade Debate Challenge, solicited support from the University management for some of the team’s continental activities later in the year.
