UNILORIN to get Immigration Liaison Office soon, says Kwara NIS boss

The Comptroller of the Nigeria Immigration Service(NIS), Kwara State Command, Mr H. A. Ibrahim, has said that the NIS would soon establish a liaison office at the University of Ilorin to take care of the immigration needs of students from other countries studying  at the University.

Mr Ibrahim disclosed this last Thursday (December 11, 2025) while speaking at the orientation programme organised for the students by the University’s Centre for International Education (CIE) at the Faculty of Education Lecture Theatre.

The Comptroller, who was represented by an Assistant Comptroller in the Command, Mr O. K. Aliyu, said that pending the establishment of the Office international students of the University should feel free to visit the Command Headquarters  to sort out issues.

Mr Ibrahim advised the students to learn and inculcate basic Nigerian laws and culture, saying that ignorance would never be an excuse for wrong doings.

He also enjoined them to ensure that their documents such as passports and visas are kept safe. He said this is necessary to avoid unnecessary embarrashment.

Mr Ibrahim also urged the students to build positive relationships among themselves and with their colleagues from Nigeria as he urged them to always feel free to ask questions from authorities when unsure of any information.

The Comptroller said that once the international students abide by the rules of engagement they would be free to enjoy peaceful studies, protection against everyform of discrimination and access to legal assistance

In his address, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, welcomed the new international students to the University, explaining that they couldn’t have gotten a better institution to study.

Prof. Olasupo, who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research, Innovation and Technology), Prof. Mukhtair Adeiza Etudaiye, advised the students to adhere strictly to the advice as given by the immigration boss.

He also encouraged them to network with other students for them to build lifelong friendships.

Prof. Egbewole, who described the University and its host community as very peaceful and conducive for learning, urged them to face their studies squarely and take advantage of the various services offered by the University.

Speaking earlier, the Director of the Centre for International Education (CIE), Prof. Lateef Onireti Ibraheem, assured the students of excellent service delivery.

Prof. Onireti urged the students not to hesitate to approach him or any other staff of the CIE for possible assistance, saying that he and his colleagues are holding their respective positions to make the sojourn of the international students at the University very peaceful and rewarding.

Highpoint of the event was the presentation of certificates to some students who excelled at a recent training organised by the CIE.

The event was attended by the Registrar, Mr Mansur Adeleke Alfanla, who was represented by a Deputy Registrar, Mrs Mary Olayemi; the Sub-Dean, Student Affairs, Dr Rasheed Onagun; the President of the UNILORIN Student Union, Mr Idris Ayomo Adelu and a Visiting Professor from the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Bola Simeon-Fayomi as well as several  international students, among others.
