By Idris Alooma

The University of Ilorin Sports Unit has been ranked as one of the best units in the institution, with an impressive array of achievements in various sporting activities.

The Director of Sports, Prof. Tajudeen Olarewaju Ibraheem, stated this last Tuesday (July 22, 2025) while featuring on a popular Yoruba Current Affairs programme on UNILORIN FM, titled “Oro to n lo” anchored by the General Manager of the radio station, Mr. Idris Alooma.

He attributed the success of the Unit to professionalism, modern equipment, and facilities, which have enabled it to stand out among its peers. Currently, Unilorin students are participating in the World University Games in Germany, and the unit has won numerous national, continental, and international gold medals.

Prof. Ibraheem highlighted the achievements of the Unit in various sporting events, including football, volleyball, handball, basketball, squash, running, javelin, shot put, badminton, and table tennis. He further stressed that the Unit has recorded many achievements, winning gold and other medals in Nigeria University Games and West Africa University Games.

He said that despite funding challenges from the Ministry in charge of the World University Games, one of the three qualified Unilorin students, Aina Kayode Precious, was sponsored for the trip and is currently performing excellently in Germany.

Prof. Ibrahim expressed appreciation to the University management for its support, particularly the procurement of equipment worth ₦19 million for the Sports Unit by the Administration of Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN.

The Director appealed for public-private partnerships to establish a swimming pool, citing the high capital investment required.

He emphasised the importance of regular exercise in keeping fit and advocated for the unit to go commercial by selling its footballers and other professionals.

The Sports Unit is collaborating with the Department of Human Kinetics Education to offer a wide range of academic programmes, including short-term Diploma, first degree, Master, and Ph.D programmes.

Prof. Ibraheem disclosed that many Unilorin students and graduates have made names for themselves in various football clubs, studying and earning substantial amounts of money. The recent President Federation Cup won by Kwara United, with one of Unilorin’s students, Surajudeen Ayeleso, as their goalkeeper, he said, is a testament to the Unit’s excellence.

Prof. Ibraheem said that with its impressive track record, modern equipment, and supportive management, the Unilorin Sports Unit is poised to produce more talented athletes and achieve even greater successes in the years to come.
