By Abubakar Imam
The University of Ilorin has added two more names to the list of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN) produced by its Faculty of Law with the elevation of Prof. Mubarak Tijani Adekilekun and Mr Habeeb AbdulRahman Oredola to the country’s prestigious silk fold.
The title of Senior Advocate of Nigeria, the highest honour conferred on legal practitioners in Nigeria, was introduced in 1975.
While Prof. Adekilekun teaches at the institution’s Department of Business Law, Mr Oredola is a Lagos-based legal practitioner. The two of them received their Bachelor’s degree in Law from the University in 2003 and 2005, respectively.
The conferment of the prestigious rank on the two Unilorites, along with 55 others, was announced last Thursday (July 24, 2025) by the Secretary to the Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee (LPPC), Mr Kabir Eniola Akanbi, at a press conference he addressed at the end of the 169th meeting of the Committee held at the Supreme Court of Nigeria Complex, Abuja.
Mr Akanbi, who is also the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, explained that the 57 new Senior Advocates were selected from among over 70 lawyers that applied for the position this year from all over the country.
The selection of the new silks, according to Mr Akanbi, was made by the LPPC under the chairmanship of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Motomori Kekere-Ekun, GCON.
He added that the new Senior Advocates would be sworn-in by Justice Kekere-Ekun at the Supreme Court Complex, Abuja, on Monday, September 29, 2025.
Meanwhile, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has congratulated the two UNILORIN alumni on their elevation to the SANship rank.
In a statement issued by the University’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr Kunle Akogun, the Vice Chancellor said that he was not surprised with the development, as the two new silks are formidable products and veritable prides of the Better by far University.
Prof. Egbewole described the duo as outstanding lawyers and scholars who truly deserve the elevation as they have always proven their professional mettles.
He explained that having taught the two legal luminaries during their days as students of the University and his professional interactions with each of them thereafter, he was delighted that their worth has been recognised through the elevation.
While welcoming the two new Senior Advocates into the inner bar, Prof. Egbewole said that the management, staff and students of the University are not only delighted by the elevation but they also see it as an anniversary gift as the University prepares for the celebration of its Golden Jubilee.
The Vice Chancellor said that he was sure that the University of Ilorin would continue to produce more silks every year because of the quality of knowledge imparted on its products.
Prof. Egbewole, who congratulated the new silks for attaining the pinnacle of the legal profession in Nigeria, urged other alumni and students of the University to keep the flag of the University flying higher, saying that the best is yet to come.
