UNILORIN medical programmes to benefit from FG equipment support

Following submissions by medical schools to the Ministerial Monitoring Committee and their subsequent scrutiny by the Federal Ministry of Education, the University of Ilorin has been selected along with 14 other institutions that would benefit from the provision of multimillion naira equipment, consumables and reagents interventions by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND).

This intervention, according to a letter dated March 5, 2026 addressed to the Vice Chancellor of the University,Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, and signed by the Executive Secretary of TETFUND, Arc. Sonny S. T. Echono, is intended to provide more materials for training students of the benefiting institutions in Medicine and Surgery, Dentistry, Nursing and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

According to the letter, a copy a copy of which was made available to UNILORIN Bulletin, other beneficiary institutions are the University of Maiduguri, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, the Gombe State University, Gombe; and the University of Ibadan.

Others include the ⁠University of Lagos. Akoka; Obafemi Awolowo University,Ile-Ife; the University of Jos. Jos;  Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria; Bayero University, Kano; and the University of  Benin. Benin-City.

The rest are the University of Port Harcourt, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka; and the Nnamdi Azikwe University, Awka.

Arc. Echono added that the concerned Institutions are to furnish the Ministerial Team with the list of equipment, consumables and reagents they lack based on the regulatory bodies (Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, Pharmaceutical Council of Nigeria and Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria) last accreditation visits from the Heads of Departments through their respective Vice Chancellors.

The Executive Secretary, however, explained that some universities such as the Usman Danfodio University, Sokoto; ⁠the Federal University Lafia, the University of Uyo, the Federal University of Health Sciences, Ila Orangun; David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences, Ebonyi State; the ⁠Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare, have been placed on reserve in case any of the 14 earlier mentioned universities failed to respond by March 31, 2026

Speaking on the intervention, the Chairman of the Ministerial Monitoring Committee and Provost, College of Health Sciences, University of Ilorin, Prof. Biodun Sulyman Alabi, thanked the Federal Government, particularly the Minister of Education, Dr Alausa, for what he called “the landmark achievements”.

He expressed the conviction that the intervention would go a long way in producing more qualitative medical professionals by the benefiting students for the benefit of the nation.
