UNILORIN drivers honour retired colleagues

The University of Ilorin Drivers’ Welfare Association has honoured its retired members in recognition of their commitment, dedication and sacrifices towards the growth of the institution.

The event, which was held penultimate  Saturday (January 24, 2026) at the UNILORIN Pensioners’ Hall, Mini Campus, was part of the Association’s 2025 end-of-the-year activities.

Those honoured were Mr Raufu Amori, Mr Abdullahi Bello, Mr Oba Suleman, Mr Musiliu Yusuf, Mr Akeredolu Adams, Mr Tolorunleke Samuel and Mr Fatai Yahaya.

Speaking at the event, the  Registrar of the University, Mr Mansur Adeleke Alfanla, who was represented by the Deputy Registrar, Mr Kabir Adewoyin, congratulated the retirees for successfully completing their service.

He said, “The University management appreciates all your sacrifices, and you shall live to enjoy the fruits of your labour,” adding that drivers play a critical role in the University community.

The Registrar charged serving drivers to remain committed and professional in the discharge of their duties, stressing that appearance and conduct matter. “You will be addressed the way you are dressed,” he noted.

In his remarks, the Director of Works, University of Ilorin, Mr Rahmon Amao, represented by a Deputy Director at the Department, Mr Tosin Obafemi, urged the drivers to maintain unity with other units under the Works Department, noting that collective efforts is key to progress.

Similarly, the Director of the Physical Planning Unit, Mr AbdulRahman Toyin Jimoh, advised the drivers to be good image makers and worthy ambassadors of the University, urging them to maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times.

Also speaking, the Director of the University Health Services Unit, Dr Abdulrasheed Adekeye Odunola, encouraged the drivers to prioritise their health, stressing that good health is essential for productivity.

He advised them on regular medical check-ups, healthy eating, exercise and warned them against smoking, excessive alcohol intake and hard drugs.

Speaking earlier, the Chairman of the Association, Mr Afolabi Samuel, congratulated the retirees as he wished those who are still in service a more rewarding career.

Mr Afolabi appreciated the University management, led by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, for its continued support of  the drivers’ unit.

He further charged members to practise self-care, defensive driving, regular vehicle maintenance, and to remain calm, alert and professional while on duty.

Responding on behalf of the retirees, Mr Amori expressed gratitude to the association and invited guests for the honour accorded them, while praying for the continued progress of the union.

Highlights of the event included the presentation of gifts to the retirees.

Among those in attendance were Mr Yusuf MKB of the Bursary Department, retired drivers and members of the association.
