UNILORIN centenary aspirations: Charting the path to global leadership

It’s no longer news that the University of Ilorin celebrated its Golden Jubilee in November last year, but what’s remarkable is that the institution has positioned itself as a centenary global ruler, solidifying its position as a leading University in Nigeria and beyond.
With a vision to be “an international centre of excellence in learning, research, probity, and service to humanity,” UNILORIN has consistently demonstrated its commitment to academic excellence, cutting-edge research, and community service.
UNILORIN’s consistent maintenance of academic excellence has earned it the status of a most sought-after University. The institution’s relentless pursuit of excellence is being driven by its visionary leadership, under the guidance of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN.
The globalisation and internationalisation efforts of the University, driven by the Centre for International Education (CIE), have yielded significant results through seminars, international workshops, collaborations, and exchange programmes. The Linguistics Immersion Centre has also been instrumental in promoting cultural exchange and understanding, fostering a culture of inclusivity and tolerance.
UNILORIN’s diverse community includes international students at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, as well as foreign staff members, enriching the academic environment. This diversity has prepared students for global citizenship, equipping them with the skills and knowledge to compete in the global arena.
The infrastructure development of the University has been a great success, among which is the UNILORIN Innovation Hub. The ongoing Motor Park project is a testament to the commitment of the University to creating a conducive learning environment and enhancing the overall student experience.
UNILORIN’s academic programmes have received a significant boost, with the introduction of new Faculties and Departments. The University now boasts 16 Faculties and over 100 academic Departments, offering 103 programmes with a strong focus on research and innovation. The creation of the Centre for Management and Leadership, underscores the University’s focus on developing future leaders.
Research has been a key area of focus for the University, with over ₦12 billion in research grants secured. Notable projects like the Tech-Industrial Park, Stem Cell Centre, and Innovation Hub have positioned the University as a hub for innovation and entrepreneurship, driving economic growth and development.
Under Prof. Egbewole’s leadership, the University has experienced significant growth and development, driven by a culture of “TEAM” (Together Each Achieves More) and an uninterrupted academic calendar. His administration has encouraged the formation of KU8+, with him as Chairman, positioning Kwara-based universities as models for Nigerian and African tertiary institutions. A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Prof. Egbewole serves as Secretary-General of the Association of West African Universities (AWAU), a position he was elected to in January 2023, and Vice-President (West Africa) of the Association of African Universities (AAU), elected during the 16th General Conference in Rabat, Morocco, placing UNILORIN at the forefront with global distinction.
Alumni of the University have become leaders nationally and internationally, holding key positions and serving as ambassadors of the University. The institution has produced world-renowned individuals, including Guinness Book of Records breakers, a testament to its commitment to excellence.
The UNILORIN Advancement Centre has played a pivotal role in connecting the University with esteemed global partners, fostering collaborations and attracting funds for developmental projects. This strategic engagement has not only elevated UNILORIN’s international profile, it has also facilitated knowledge sharing, research opportunities, and infrastructure development, ultimately enhancing the institution’s pursuit of academic excellence. Also, the establishment of the Centre for Blue and Regenerative Economy is a significant step positioning the University to take a leading role in addressing global environmental and economic challenges.
As UNILORIN looks to the future, it’s clear that the institution is poised for even greater heights. With a strategic plan focused on consolidating its position as a premier institution, addressing community and national needs, and achieving global recognition, the University is on track to becoming a leading world-class University, achieving centenary greatness and cementing its position as an institutional global ruler.
