The best graduating student from the Department of Geology and Mineral Sciences, Faculty of Physical Sciences, University of Ilorin, Ikwelle Emmanuel Chidera, has won the Best Thesis Award for his outstanding undergraduate thesis during the 2022/2023 academic session.
The award, presented by the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS), is recognised as one of the highest honors in Nigeria’s mining and geosciences sector, aimed at celebrating exceptional academic work among students from leading Nigerian universities that offer Mining and Geosciences programmes.
The award, which was presented during the 60th annual conference of NMGS held in Abuja from February 16 to 21, 2025, also showcased the contributions of both emerging scholars and seasoned professionals to the advancement of geosciences research and academia.
Chidera’s thesis stood out among numerous submissions, reflecting the students’ dedication and expertise in the field. This recognition not only highlights the individual accomplishments but also underscores the quality of education and research being conducted at the University of Ilorin.
In addition to Chidera’s attainment, another notable achievement was recorded at the conference with the immediate past Head of the Department, Prof. O. A. Adekeye, securing a Fellowship. This further underscored the commitment of the University to fostering talent in geosciences, and also highlighted the importance of mentorship and collaboration between experienced professionals and young scholars in fostering growth within the industry

Reacting to the laurels, the Dean of the Faculty of physical Sciences, Prof. Abdullahi Baba Alafara, congratulated the duo on their remarkable achievements, expressing his hopes for their continued success in their academic journey.
