UNILORIN Alumni Spotlight is on Ademola Adekunbi — Class of 2018!

Ademola Adekunbi (Ade) is a privacy and innovation-focused lawyer, currently serving as Senior Legal Services Manager (Data & Research) at The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, the UK’s leading cancer centre and a world leader in healthcare innovation. In this role, he supports high-impact research and clinical partnerships—particularly by facilitating cross-border data-sharing, managing complex research agreements, and ensuring data protection compliance in global collaborations with pharmaceutical companies, other healthcare  organisations, and academic institutions.

At UNILORIN, Ade served as Attorney General and subsequently Lord Advocate of Liberty Chambers, and then as a Senator and subsequently Senate President of the Students’ Union. He also represented the university in various debate competitions and won a variety of awards within and outside the country, including winning the 4th All-Nigeria Universities Debating Championship and being recognised as the top debater in Africa at the Pan African Universities University Debating Competition. In addition, he received several writing awards including from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, Georgetown University, and Carnegie Council.

A UNILORIN alumnus, Ade ranked in the top 3% of nearly 6,000 candidates at the Nigerian Law School (First Class). He later earned an LL.M. in Commercial Law with Distinction from the University of Exeter, supported by a Global Excellence Scholarship and recognized with a Dean’s Commendation and The Exeter Award.

His career spans technology, healthcare, and research law: from early roles at a leading tech law firm and a fintech startup in Lagos, to working at a UK-based privacy law consultancy, and later serving as an Information Governance Manager at one of the UK’s largest National Health Service Trusts in London. Along the way, he has gained deep expertise in international data transfers, IP and licensing, research compliance, and the legal frameworks that underpin responsible innovation in health and technology.

He is passionate about helping organisations navigate the legal and ethical challenges of using data to advance tomorrow’s healthcare solutions.
