President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has approved the appointment of a distinguished alumnus of the University of Ilorin,  Mr Rotimi Iseoluwa Oyedepo, SAN, as the new Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Mr Oyedepo, a 2007 graduate of the Faculty of Law, University of Ilorin, is, by the appointment, being transferred from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) where he currently works, to the mainstream Federal Civil Service as DPP in the Federal Ministry of Justice

A letter dated December 23, 2025, signed by Omolabake Mafe, on behalf of the Chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission, stated that Mr Oyedepo’s appointment was made in the public interest.

According to a statement by Abiodun Oladunjoye, Director Information & Public Relations in the State House, as DPP, Mr Oyedepo will fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Mr Abubakar Babadoko, who attained the mandatory eight years as a Director on December 31, 2025.

Mr Oyedepo, who was called to the Nigerian Bar in 2008, is expected to deploy his expertise to reduce reliance on external counsel for critical prosecutions and to ensure greater coherence and consistency in the Federal Government’s legal strategies.

Before this appointment, Mr Oyedepo worked at the EFCC for over 15 years, specialising in the prosecution of complex economic and financial crimes. He also served as the Head of the anti-graft agency’s Monitoring Unit.

Meanwhile, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole,SAN, has described the appointment of Mr Oyedepo as “very befitting and a perfect New Year gift to our University”.

In a statement signed by the University’s Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr Kunle Akogun, the Vice Chancellor urged Mr Oyedepo to take his new role with his characteristic hardwork and integrity.

While assuring him of the prayers of the entire members of the University community, Prof. Egbewole wished Mr Oyedepo a very peaceful, successful and rewarding tenure.
