The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has commended the University of Ilorin on its prudent and impactful use of resources provided by the intervention agency.

A delegation from TETFund, led by Engr. Nurudeen Adeyemi Balogun, visited the University last Friday (September 26, 2025) to monitor both ongoing and completed projects funded through the scheme. The team commended the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, and his management team for being very good stewards of the resources made available to them.

Engr. Balogun, who is a member of the TETFund Board, representing the North Central Zone, said he expected nothing less from Unilorin, known as “Better by Far.” He expressed satisfaction with the quality of work, noting that taxpayers have received value for their money.

According to the monitoring committee, the University of Ilorin has maintained its reputation as an institution that sets high standards, as reflected in the impressive infrastructure and facilities supported by TETFund.

While commenting on government initiatives under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, which seeks to improve the welfare of Nigerian students, Engr. Balogun explained that the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) was designed to ease the financial burden on students and discourage them from engaging in negative activities while in school.

He added that other initiatives also aim to introduce opportunities for students to earn income while studying, particularly in the digital and IT sectors such as coding and remote work. He said this model, which is similar to practices in countries like India, is expected to make education more attractive and rewarding for Nigerian youths.

While welcoming the team to the University, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, expressed appreciation to TETFund for its sustained support to the institution and tertiary education in Nigeria.

Prof. Egbewole acknowledged the remarkable contributions of TETFund to the development of the University, noting that Unilorin was among the institutions selected to expand training in Medical Sciences in order to address the shortage of healthcare professionals in the country.

He explained that the interventions have enabled the University to execute key projects and undertake academic expansion aimed at boosting its capacity to admit and train more students in the medical fields.

While appealing for more interventions, the Vice-Chancellor reiterated the University’s commitment to complementing TETFund’s support through innovative initiatives.

He mentioned the institution’s work-study programme, which allows students to work for a few hours on campus and receive payment, thereby easing their financial burdens. He added that the University also operates a campus shuttle system driven by students with valid licences to further enhance opportunities for student empowerment, noting that this initiative complements the Federal Government’s efforts in education.

The Vice-Chancellor later took the team round the campus to inspect all ongoing and completed projects and also presented copies of the Progress Report on the 2024/2025 TETFund allocation to the University of Ilorin during the event.
