SWAN honours UNILORIN FM for promoting sports development

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Kwara State Chapter, has honoured the Unilorin FM with a Certificate of Appreciation in recognition of the station’s outstanding contributions to sports promotion, visibility, and development in the state.

The award was presented penultimate Thursday (December 18, 2025) during the Association Public Lecture in honour of the Governor of Kwara State, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, where key stakeholders in the sports and media sectors gathered to celebrate organisations and individuals who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to the growth of sports in Kwara State.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the Kwara SWAN, Mr Ayodeji Ismail, described Unilorin FM as a vibrant and reliable media partner whose consistent coverage has continued to elevate local sports stories, athletes, and sporting institutions.

He said the station has played a crucial role in amplifying sports discourse and inspiring grassroots participation across the state.

“Unilorin FM has remained steadfast in giving sports the attention it deserves. Their dedication to reporting, analysis, and media visibility has contributed immensely to the development of sports in Kwara. This recognition is not just an award, but a testimony to the impact they continue to make,” Ismail said.

The SWAN Chairman added that the Association would continue to acknowledge institutions and personalities who are contributing to the advancement of sports journalism, grassroots awareness, and public engagement through the media.

In his remarks, the Station Manager of Unilorin FM, Mr Idris Ibrahim Akintola (Alooma), reaffirmed the commitment of the radio station to supporting local athletes and sports organisations through consistent programming, analysis, interviews, and documentaries aimed at enriching public understanding and participation in sports.

Mr Alooma, who was represented by the Ex-Officio I of SWAN, Kwara State, Mr Mustafa Abubakar,  expressed appreciation to SWAN  for the gesture, describing it as a motivation to intensify efforts in promoting sports culture within the University community and Kwara State at large.

Stakeholders present at the event applauded the move, noting that media organisations like Unilorin FM have become central to driving sports development and providing platforms where local talents can be projected to national and global audiences.
