The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has said that sustainable food supply is not only a necessity but also essential to national survival and economic stability.
Prof. Egbewole stated this last Wednesday (June 11, 2025), while welcoming the Director of the Nigerian Army Resource Centre, Abuja, Major General Bello Alhaji Tsoho, and his team to the University.
Major Gen. Tsoho, who is also an alumnus of the University, was in Ilorin to deliver the 9th Faculty of Agriculture Public Lecture.
The Vice Chancellor, who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Taibat M. Bakare-Odunola, said, “There is no better time than now to highlight the importance of agriculture”, adding that “sustainable food supply is not just a necessity, it is vital to national survival.”
Prof. Egbewole noted that the Faculty Lecture aligned with the Faculty’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), aiming to address critical issues such as food security, agricultural sustainability, and national development.
The Vice Chancellor also appreciated Major Gen. Tsoho for honouring the invitation and sustaining his connection with his alma mater, noting that such gestures represent meaningful ways of giving back to the institution.
Earlier in his remarks, the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Prof. Oluyemisi B. Fawole, expressed gratitude to the University management and the visiting alumnus, who also serves as a Research Fellow, for their unwavering support.
Prof. Fawole lauded their joint commitment to advancing academic excellence and promoting national development through agricultural innovation and dialogue.
The 9th Faculty of Agriculture Public Lecture remains one of the University’s flagship intellectual platforms for engaging stakeholders on sustainable food systems and the future of agriculture in Nigeria.
