Brief Profile of the Head of the Department of Animal Production
Dr Ayokunle Afolabi Toye is an academic scholar, lecturer, research scientist and administrator. He graduated top of his Faculty year with a First Class honours degree in Genetics in Animal Production at the University of Ilorin, Nigeria. He holds a Ph.D. in Molecular and Quantitative Genetics from the prestigious University of Sydney, Australia’s premier university, and a certificate in business from Britain’s premier university, Oxford. He has lectured and trained undergraduate and graduate students and assistants and led and participated in research at leading Universities and Research Institutions across several continents including Australia, Africa and Europe/UK (University of Sydney, Australia; Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council’s Institute for Animal Health, UK; Medical Research Council UK; Oxford University UK; University of Leicester, UK, and; University of Ilorin, Nigeria).
Dr Toye lectures in the Department of Animal Production at the University of Ilorin, Nigeria, at which he also leads a team of post-doctoral, graduate (Ph.D/M.Sc.) and undergraduate scientists in discovery and translational research. His research interest is in the elucidation of the fundamental determinants of growth, production, health and disease at the molecular, cellular, and organismal level in animal models. He has over 50 scientific publications in leading journals to his credit, has published books in his area of specialism and is a member of several local and international scientific societies and research networks.
Dr Toye has assessed Ph.D. theses internationally and is a consultant to State Governments in his area of specialism. He is erstwhile and premier Director (Ag.) of University of Ilorin’s Institute for Molecular Science and Biotechnology (2013-2016), Chair of the University’s Moringa Plantation Management Committee, Editor in Chief of the International Journal of Moringa and Nutraceutical Research and member of several university level Committees and Senate.
Dr. Toye is married to Arc. Mrs Ibilola Adetokunbo Toye. He is a member of the Diocesan Board of Igbomina West, Nigerian Anglican Communion, an avid reader and a sports, music and architecture hobbyist.
