An alumnus of the University of Ilorin, and sports manager, Mr Shogo Shodunnke, has lauded the institution for shaping lives, instilling discipline, and contributing significantly to Nigeria’s development over the last five decades.

Mr Shodunnke, who earned his postgraduate degree in Strategic Management from the then Department of Management Science of the University, made this known last Tuesday (September 23, 2025) while speaking with UNILORIN Bulletin shortly after a sports talk organised by him in Ilorin.

The social sports entrepreneur said his academic journey at UNILORIN equipped him with values and skills that continue to drive his career.

“UNILORIN shaped my values and gave me the foundation that drives my work today,” he said, recalling how campus experiences sparked his interest in innovation.

He noted that working with fellow students on projects outside the classroom revealed the power of collaboration and creativity skills he still applies in sports and business.

According to him, the culture of resilience and discipline of the University helped him to see sports not just as a game but as “a tool for innovation and transformation.”

Describing UNILORIN’s jubilee as a proud moment for the entire community, Mr Shodunnke stressed that the slogan of the University, “better by far” has set it apart in the Nigerian academic landscape.

“The culture of excellence, discipline, and consistency makes it unique among Nigerian universities,” he added.

He commended graduates of the institution for their far reaching impact across sectors.

“From public service to academia, business, medicine, and technology, UNILORIN  alumni have been at the forefront of shaping Nigeria’s growth,” he said.

Mr Shodunnke urged the University to build on its legacy by embracing technology, strengthening industry partnerships, and nurturing student innovation.

As the convener of a seminar linking sports with technology, he underscored UNILORIN’s potential to lead in that space.

“UNILORIN can be a hub for research and practical applications in sports tech, producing graduates who drive change in African sports,” he suggested, while calling for greater investment and structured programmes to fully integrate sports into education.

He encouraged the students to embrace curiosity, innovation, and resilience.

“Ideas become powerful when backed with action, teamwork, and persistence. Stay curious, embrace technology, and never be afraid to think globally while acting locally,” he said.

Mr Shodunnke proposed the establishment of a world class Innovation and Sports Technology Centre that would link academics with practical solutions for Africa, as a golden jubilee legacy project.

He called on fellow alumni and the University community to keep the institution’s torch burning.

“Let’s uphold the ‘better by far’ spirit, support our University, and give back to the next generation of students.”
