Sambo calls for urgent judicial reforms

A Professor at the Department of Public Law, University of Ilorin, Abdulfatai Oladapo Sambo, has called for urgent reform of the nation’s judiciary in order to restore public confidence in the sector.

Prof. Sambo gave this advice in a lecture, titled “Navigating the Grey Areas in Nigeria’s Judicial System: Inculcating Front Loading in Inferior Courts”, which he delivered at a retreat organised penultimate Thursday (October 30, 2025) by the Ilorin Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).

The renowned Law teacher also said that Nigeria needs to engage in purposive constitutional alterations, saying that the nation’s constitution is ripe for amendment to meet contemporary realities.

Prof. Sambo also called for closer monitoring and checks by the National Judicial Council to ensure that those who interpret the laws are carrying out their responsibilities as enshrined in the Constitution.

The event was attended by legal practitioners and other members of the public as well as several staff members and students of the University of Ilorin.

The highpoint of the event was the presentation of an  “Award of Appreciation” to Prof. Sambo by the Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary, Kwara State Ministry of Justice, Mrs S. K. Grillo, on behalf of the Ilorin Branch of the NBA.
