Popoola appointed CMD of TAUTH

A former Head of the Department of Surgery, University of Ilorin,Prof. Ademola Alabi Popoola, has been appointed the pioneer Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the newly-designated Thomas Adewumi University Teaching Hospital (TAUTH), Omu-Aran, by the Kwara State Governor, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

In a statement by the Kwara State Commissioner for Health, Dr Amina Ahmed El-Imam, a copy of which was made available to UNILORIN Bulletin, government said that the appointment followed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) recently signed between the Kwara State Government and Thomas Adewumi University, Oko, which officially converted the General Hospital, Omu-Aran, into a teaching hospital for the institution.

Dr El-Imam described the appointment as a strategic step by the government to provide visionary leadership capable of steering the new facility towards global standards in medical training, research, and service delivery.

She emphasised that the initiative would not only elevate the medical education programme of Thomas Adewumi University but also expand access to quality healthcare services for the people of Kwara State and beyond.

“With this appointment, the Kwara State Government has once again demonstrated its commitment to building a healthier, stronger, and more prosperous future for its citizens,” El-Imam added.

Before his appointment, the distinguished surgeon has recorded a leadership prowess that has been well recognised in professional and academic circles, particularly through his active roles in the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN), the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), the Burns Unit, and the Urology Team.

In his remarks, the Provost of the College of Health Sciences, University of Ilorin, Prof. B. S. Alabi, described Prof. Popoola as a distinguished consultant surgeon and urologist. He noted that Prof. Popoola, who graduated from the University of Ilorin in 1991, later completed his residency training at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), where he qualified as a consultant urologist.

Prof. Alabi highlighted Prof. Popoola’s reputation for surgical skills, dedication, and administrative competence. He recalled his services as Head of the Department of Surgery at both the University of Ilorin and UITH as well as his role in facilitating the establishment of the UITH Burns Unit by Alhaji Sheriff Shagaya.

He wished him success in the new role and prayed for God’s guidance as he takes on the assignment.
