The death has been announced of a prominent community leader and Magaji of Onagun family, Ilorin, Alhaji Abdullahi Onagun. Alhaji Onagun was the father of the Sub-Dean, Student Affairs (Main Campus), University of Ilorin, Dr Rasheed Onagun.

The deceased, who served as the Treasurer of the Old Ilorin Local Government Council between 1976 and 1996, passed away last Monday (September 22, 2025) after an old-age related illness. His remains were subsequently buried in accordance with Islamic rites on the same date in Ilorin after a Janazah prayer.

Meanwhile the fidau for the repose of the soul of the late Alhaji Onagun was held last Saturday (September 27, 2025) at Ita-Egba Mosque, Pakata Road, Ilorin.

The event was witnessed by several dignitaries including the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Prof. Ibrahim Abdulganiyu Jawondo and the Chairman of the University of Ilorin Admission Committee, Prof. AbdulAzeez Muhammad-Lawal.

Also in attendance were a former Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Prof. Ahmad Shehu Abdulssalam; a Professor at the Department of Arabic, Abdulganiyu Abimbola Abdulsalam; and the Ag. Dean, Student Affairs, Dr Alex  Akanmu, among several others.

Speaking with UNILORIN Bulletin on the sideline of the event, Dr Onagun thanked the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, and all the Principal Officers as well as the entire University community for standing by him and his family since the death of his late father.

Dr Onagun, who teaches at the Department of History and International Studies, added that he felt highly honoured with the physical presence and other forms of representation made to his family by several members of the University community in order to sympathise with him and his siblings as he prayed to Allah to reward all most abundantly.
