A former Head of the Department of Information Technology, University of Ilorin, Dr Muhtahir Oluwaseyi Oloyede, has called on Nigerian youths to leverage technology for national development and positive changes.
Speaking at the Amazon Web Services Day 2025, organised by the AWS Student Community, Unilorin Chapter penultimate Saturday, (December 13, 2025) at Ilorin Innovation Hub, GRA, Ilorin, Dr Oloyede emphasised the importance of acquiring technological skills to drive innovation, entrepreneurship, and solutions to societal challenges.
With the theme “Igniting The Next Generation of Builders: Cloud, AI and Community Innovation for a Smarter Future,” Dr Oloyede stressed that technology has the potential to revolutionise various sectors, including education, healthcare, agriculture, and governance.
He encouraged young Nigerians to explore technology’s possibilities, acquire skills in emerging areas, and remain relevant in the digital age. Dr Oloyede also warned against technology misuse, emphasising responsible and ethical application.
The renowned scholar commended the University of Ilorin for embracing technology, noting that the establishment of the UNILORIN Innovation Hub, where students can share ideas and receive guidance to turn their ideas into reality, is timely. Dr Oloyede advised students to continually learn, upskill, and engage with relevant ecosystems to succeed in technology.
The Captain of the AWS Student Community, University of Ilorin, Mr Abolaji Abdulrahman, expressed gratitude to the University management under the stewardship of Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, for providing an enabling environment. He acknowledged the support of Prof. Rasheed Gbenga Jimoh, the Director of COMSIT, and Dr Amos Bajeh, patron of the community, for their guidance and support.
Mr Abdulrahman stated that the community aims to integrate cloud knowledge into the University as it has been organising trainings and workshops for students since its inception in 2023.
He announced plans for a 3-month AWS certification programme for students to learn about cloud computing, further solidifying the university’s commitment to technological advancement.
