By Adewole Muizdeen

The immediate past Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, University of Ilorin, Prof. Jamiu Kolawole Odusote, has urged students of the Faculty to embrace honesty, integrity, and accountability as key pillars of effective leadership.

Prof. Odusote made this charge last Wednesday (October 8, 2025) while addressing participants at a lecture held at the University Auditorium. The event was organised by the National Association of Muslim Engineering and Technology Students (NAMETS) in collaboration with the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN), Faculty of Engineering and Technology, University of Ilorin.

The former Dean opined that successful administration requires strategic and tactical planning, which entails setting clear objectives, defining specific actions, and efficiently managing available resources.

He reminded the students that leadership is not merely about holding positions of power but about taking responsibility, making sound decisions, and remaining accountable to those they lead.

On his part, Dr Imam Kamaldeen Ajijolakewu, an Associate Professor at the Department of  Microbiology, University of Ilorin, highlighted the significance of trust in leadership, which he described as a timeless Islamic principle that emphasises trustworthiness, diligence, and a positive work ethic.

Dr Ajijolakewu noted that, in Islam, leaders are considered trustees of Allāh who are tasked with upholding justice, integrity, and compassion.

In his presentation, Mr Abu Khadijah Shakir Bn Yusuf Assanady  emphasised the importance of leading by example. He highlighted that Muslim executives, as role models, must embody Islamic etiquettes and values in their professional and personal lives, which include demonstrating honesty, fairness, and compassion, as well as maintaining strong relationships with colleagues, subordinates, and the community.

He stated that by adopting the Prophet Muhammad’s teachings, Muslim executives can inspire others to follow Islamic values, create a positive work environment, and foster strong relationships.
