NUESA empowers UNILORIN students with skills and resources

The National Union of Education Students (NUESA) has reaffirmed its commitment to student empowerment and societal development through a transformative initiative aimed at equipping education students with essential skills and resources.

The event, held at the Faculty of Education main hall, penultimate Wednesday (March 6, 2025), brought together students, experienced educators, and industry professionals to promote innovation and self-reliance among the students.

In his opening remarks, the Dean of the Faculty of Education, Prof. Lasiele Alabi Yahaya, expressed appreciation to the NUESA leadership for their outstanding efforts.

He emphasised the importance of the Faculty of Education as the foundation of all disciplines and encouraged students to take advantage of the opportunity provided by the Union. He pointed out that leadership is about service to humanity, and students must take responsibility for their growth and development.

Prof. Yahaya urged the beneficiaries to see the support they received as a stepping stone, make good use of the equipment, and eventually give back to the society.

The Ag. Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Alex Morenikeji Akanmu, also commended the Faculty of Education  on initiating and nurturing such a commendable programme.

He encouraged the recipients to view the assistance as an investment with a ripple effect and advised them to distinguish themselves through dedication and hard work.

In his own remarks, the President of NUESA, Mr Adeoye Abdulrasheed, reflected on the inspiration of the initiative, adding that many students had acquired skills but lacked the necessary tools to put them into practice.

Mr Adeoye highlighted the importance of the programme, stressing that Education students should not only excel academically but also develop practical skills to make meaningful contributions to the society.

Among the beneficiaries of the empowerment programme were Miss Fabowale Gbemisola from Social Sciences Education, who received a sewing machine; Raheem Yusuf Titilope from Arts Education, who got a laptop; Fowewe Mariam Kikelomo from Educational Technology, who won an oven; Oyewusi Oluwadamilare from Arts Education, who received a clipper; Joash Boluwatife from Arts Education, who got a hair dryer; and Omotosho Israel from Geophysics Department, who won a plot of land worth N1 million.

For the business grants, Olayiwola Kerimat from Science Education secured N100, 000 as the second runner-up; Jimoh Taiye Ibraheem from Arts Education received N150,000 as the first runner-up, and Toyeebah Araoye from Zoology won the grand prize of N250,000.

The highlight of the event was the commitment of the beneficiaries to use the resources judiciously. They pledged to use their new resources to uplift others, especially in underserved communities.

Jimoh Taiye Ibraheem, who specialises in interior decoration, expressed excitement over the grant, saying it would help him purchase tools to improve efficiency and grow his business.

In his closing remarks, Prof. Yahaya praised NUESA’s proactive efforts in student empowerment and reaffirmed the University’s support for such initiatives. The event was attended by the Faculty Union Staff Adviser, Dr. Ridwanullah Oniye, the Faculty Officer and Deputy Registrar, Dr. Ebunoluwa Osagbemi, Dr. Aminat Odebode, and students of the Faculty, among others.
