The University of Ilorin, last Wednesday, (October 8, 2025), marked a historic milestone as 82 graduates of its Department of Home Economics and Food Science were inducted into the Nigerian Institute of Food Science and Technology (NIFST).
The maiden induction ceremony, held at the Agricultural Lecture Theatre (AGLT), formally welcomed the 2025 graduates into the professional body.
Delivering the keynote address on behalf of the NIFST President, Dr Bola Osiniwo, the Vice Chancellor of Fountain University, Osogbo, Prof. Ramota Karim, described the induction as a landmark achievement in the University’s quest to produce industry-ready professionals.
She told the graduands, “You are not merely graduating; you are being inducted into a noble profession. Uphold integrity, innovation, and service to humanity as your guiding principles. As the first set, you are the foundation of a legacy that will stand the test of time.”
Dr Osinowo commended the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, for his visionary leadership, which continues to strengthen the institution’s academic reputation and professional relevance.
She also lauded the Dean of Agriculture, Prof. Israel Ogunlade, and the Head of Department, Dr Adeshola A. Babayeju, for their foresight and commitment to excellence.
Also speaking, the Western Chapter Chairperson of NIFST, Prof. Bolanle A. Akinwande, praised the University for institutionalising the professional induction, noting that it would bridge the gap between academic training and industrial application.
“The food sector needs thinkers and innovators. You must be at the forefront of ensuring food quality, nutrition security, and sustainable production,” she advised.
In his address, the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Prof. Ogunlade, congratulated the Department and the inductees, describing the event as a proud moment in the Faculty’s history.
Earlier in her welcome address, the Head of Department, Dr Adeshola A. Babayeju, described the ceremony as “the fulfilment of a long awaited dream” and a major step in aligning the Department’s training with global professional standards.
She said,“This first induction marks the birth of a proud legacy. It is a testament to our resilience and the hard work of our staff and students who made this moment possible.”
She charged the inductees to remain ethical, innovative, and community driven as they embark on their professional journey.
The Student Adviser, Prof. Mutiat A. Balogun, congratulated the graduates, describing them as “trailblazers of excellence and pride of the Faculty.”
Prof. Balogun said, “As you go into the professional world, remember that integrity, creativity, and discipline are your greatest assets. You are our first fruits. Go and make us proud wherever you find yourselves.”
She also appreciated the Department’s staff for their teamwork and dedication, noting that the milestone would inspire future generations of students.
In his goodwill message, the Director of SIWES, University of Ilorin, Prof. Kayode Rowland, expressed delight at the success of the induction.
He said, “By the grace of God, your education and preparation have brought you to this defining moment. Leadership is not about position; it is a call to serve, inspire, and make lasting impact. Let unity, integrity, and purpose guide your actions as you work toward your goals.”
One of the inductees, who spoke on behalf of her colleagues, Miss Sofiyyah Abdulquadir, expressed appreciation to the University for the impactful training received as she pledged to uphold the ethics of the profession and to promote the name of the University of Ilorin with pride.
