The Head of the Department of Performing and Film Arts, University of Ilorin, Prof. Segun Oyeleke Oyewo, has encouraged students in the Department to learn from industry leaders in order to advance their careers.
Prof. Oyewo gave the advice last Wednesday (February 26, 2025), while speaking with UNILORIN Bulletin in his office.
He spoke on the need for students to connect with established professionals in the entertainment industry.
“You can’t stand alone; reach out during vacation to perform,” Prof. Oyewo advised the students, stressing the importance of collaboration and networking.
The don pointed out that teamwork among students fosters growth and helps them achieve common goals.
Prof. Oyewo also underscored the significance of strong relationships between students and lecturers, which he believes could lead to long term partnerships in the industry.
He urged students to take their studies seriously, as they might not immediately know their future specialisations.
“Others who didn’t even study entertainment are making it big. Why not you?” he challenged.
Prof. Oyewo also called on successful alumni in the entertainment sector to support upcoming talents, reminding them not to forget their journey to success.
Calling for more stage performances, the don announced the Department’s plans to revive the tradition of going on tour, a practice that once played a vital role in students’ practical learning.
He further encouraged students to develop alternative income sources through their skills rather than relying solely on white collar jobs.
Prof. Oyewo noted that the Department has produced graduates that are making considerable impacts both locally and internationally, pointing out that the Department is working on initiatives to strengthen alumni engagement with their alma mater.
He expressed gratitude to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, and the University Management for their continuous support for the Department.
The Head of Department also called on the government to provide grants to students that are committed to pursuing careers in the Performing and Film Arts.
