The 6th Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Shuaibu Oba AbdulRaheem, OFR, has said that he would continue to be proud of the University and its achievements as he described the institution as “one of the nation’s second generation citadel of learning favourably competing with older ones.”
Prof. AbdulRaheem stated this last Monday (October 13, 2025) while featuring on Countdown to UNILORIN @ 50, a special personality interview programme of UNILORIN 89.3 FM designed to celebrate the Golden jubilee of the University. The programme was anchored by Ms Bimbo Durojaiye.
The former Vice Chancellor, who held the position between 1997 and 2002, said that the University needed to be celebrated for its numerous achievements, particularly for maintaining a regular academic calendar for half of its existence.
Prof. AbdulRaheem also praised the University for producing exceptionally brilliant and upright alumni who are doing very well in various places and roles across the world.
The former Vice Chancellor, who is also the Talba of Ilorin, expressed joy with the fact that most of those employed as staff members during his tenure as Chief Executive of the institution are now running the University, saying that he is proud of their contributions to the University.
Answering a question, Prof. AbdulRaheem urged parents to assist the school’s authorities in moulding the characters of their children, saying that many of today’s undergraduates are very young people who still needed to be closely monitored for them to become responsible citizens.
Prof. AbdulRaheem, who simultaneously serves as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Councils of three universities, thanked the Federal Government for its huge investment in the University as he called for more funding for the nation’s ivory-towers to live up to expectations.
