
UNILORIN NUJ hails Alfanla on birthday

The President of the All-Nigeria Universities Debating Championship (ANUDC), Dr Abdullateef Owoade, has commended the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, and the management of the Institution for saving the 12th edition of the Championship from an imminent postponement.
The Championship, which was held from August 24 to 30, 2025, had initially faced uncertainty after the original host institution withdrew few weeks to the commencement date.
Dr Owoade said that the University of Ilorin, however, accepted the hosting rights at short notice and swiftly mobilised resources to ensure the tournament held successfully.
The ANUDC President revealed this last Friday (August 29, 2025) when he led other officials of the championship organising committee on a courtesy visit to the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN.
He disclosed that within 24 hours of receiving the request, the UNILORIN Vice Chancellor set up the necessary structures, providing accommodation, transportation, and other logistics that facilitated the smooth conduct of the event.
He said that this gesture made University of Ilorin the first university in Nigeria to host the championship three times, a feat he described as a major milestone in the history of the competition.
Dr Owoade expressed gratitude to the University for its timely intervention and unwavering support. He also appreciated the Vice Chancellor’s long-standing passion and commitment to the project.
While receiving the team, the Vice Chancellor, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research, Technology and Innovation), Prof. Muhtar Adeiza Etudaiye, said debating plays a critical role in building students’ confidence, sharpening their communication skills, and preparing them for future challenges, including job interviews and leadership responsibilities.
The Vice Chancellor pointed out that the championship was not just about producing winners but also about nurturing innovation, creativity, and excellence among Nigerian students.
He further assured the ANUDC Council that the University of Ilorin would continue to support initiatives that enhance the competitiveness of Nigerian students globally, as he reaffirmed the institution’s readiness to host the event in the future if called upon.
