GNS Director lauds Egbewole-led Administration for support

The Director of the General Studies Division (GNS), University of Ilorin, Prof. Kayode Lambe Mustapha, has praised the Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole-led Administration for its unwavering support for the Division.

Speaking on UNILORIN 89.3FM’s “Table Talk” programme jointly anchored by Mr Idris Alooma and Mr. Temitope Olawuyi, Prof. Mustafa highlighted the Administration’s commitment to providing quality education and equipping students with essential life skills.

Prof. Mustapha emphasised the importance of media literacy and curriculum revamp in Nigerian universities, noting that the GNS Division is responsible for equipping students with essential life skills, including communication, citizenship education, and conflict resolution. He also noted that the National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved the unbundling of Mass Communication courses into eight specialised programmes to better prepare students for the industry.

The Director stated that the GNS Division has introduced new courses, including Peace and Conflict Resolution, and Philosophy and Logic, to equip students with critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Prof. Mustapha, who is also a former Head of the Department of Mass Communication, emphasised the importance of media literacy, stating that it is crucial for Nigerians to critically evaluate information and avoid spreading misinformation.

The don called for the regulation of social media to prevent the spread of false information and protect national security.

The Director, however, noted that the GNS Division has received significant support from the Administration, enabling it to introduce new courses and programmes that benefit students.

Prof. Mustapha commended the University management on its efforts to improve infrastructure and resources, despite the challenges of underfunding in the education sector. He urged the government to increase funding for universities to support initiatives like the GNS Division.

He noted that the University of Ilorin GNS Division is one of the oldest in the University, as he is its 19th Director.
