Garba tasks campus motorists on regular vehicle maintenance

Operators of commercial transport services and other motorists in the University of Ilorin have been urged to prioritise the regular maintenance of their vehicles in order to ensure the safety of members of the University community who patronise them.
This advice was given by the Sub-Dean, Student Affairs, Dr Mohammed Kabir Garba, last Tuesday (May 6, 2025) while speaking with UNILORIN Bulletin at the University Motor Park.
Dr Garba, who is an Associate Professor at the Department of Statistics, said that regular vehicle maintenance is important to ensure and maintain their road worthiness.
The Sub-Dean said that the management of the University would spare no effort at promoting the safety and welfare of staff, students and even visitors to the University.
While acknowledging the contributions of commercial vehicle operators to the smooth running of the University, Dr Garba insisted that poorly maintained vehicles are “mobile morgues” as they expose passengers and other road users to danger.
Dr Garba explained that vehicle maintenance is more required at this period of the year because of the “atmospheric peculiarities” of the raining season, which exposes the engine system to various forms of weaknesses.
He advised transport owners to ensure that their lighting and brake systems work perfectly, saying that they cannot afford to improvise these important parts of their vehicles.
Dr Garba, who said that he was at the Motor Park on routine checking of services, charged the drivers to ensure that the tyres and wipers of their vehicles’ function effectively so that they would be able to drive perfectly when it rains.
While advising drivers not to drive against rainstorms, Dr Garba also charged them to ensure that the side-screens of their vehicles are also in place to ensure the comfort of their passengers.
He urged leaders of the various transport unions on campus to always communicate the desires of the University management to their members, saying that regular enlightenment programmes for the drivers would bring about greater road safety.
Dr Garba assured members of the University community that the management would continue to engage with the leadership of the campus commercial vehicle operators to ensure quality service delivery.
