The Director of Corporate Affairs, University of Ilorin, Mr Kunle Akogun, has been nominated for the hereditary chieftaincy title of Akogun of Oke-Ode in the Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State.
The nomination of the veteran journalist was made by the entire members of the Akogun chieftaincy family penultimate Sunday (June 8, 2025) during a meeting in Oke-Ode.
The consumation of the nomination would, however, await formal confirmation by the new Elesa of Oke-Ode whenever he emerges.
With his nomination, Mr Akogun would replace his late elder brother, Chief AbdulRauf Tunde Akogun, a financial technocrat and politician, who died in January, 2024.
A veteran journalist and consummate Public Relations guru of many years standing, Mr Akogun is a passionate community development enthusiast, who has played several key roles in the development of Oke-Ode and Igbomina land over the years.
Mr Akogun, who joined the services of the University of Ilorin in 2012, is the National Public Relations Officer of Oke Ode Community Development Association.
An alumnus of the University of Lagos where he received his Bachelor and Master degrees in Mass Communication in 1984 and 2002, respectively, Mr Akogun has worked in a number of media outfits prior to joining the University of Ilorin during the tenure of its 9th Vice Chancellor, Prof. Is-haq Olanrewaju Oloyede, CON.
Reacting to the nomination of Mr Akogun, the Station Manager, UNILORIN 89.3 FM, Mr Idris Akintola Ibrahim (Alooma), described it as a welcome development.
Mr Ibrahim, who spoke on behalf of the management and staff of the Directorate of Corporate Affairs, said that he was not surprised by the nomination considering the fact that Mr Akogun is not only biologically qualified for the position but also capable of discharging all the responsibilities expected of its holder.
The ace broadcaster thanked the Akogun family of Oke-Ode for recognising the leadership qualities of the veteran journalist and entrusting him with the prestigious title.
Also reacting, the Chairman of the University of Ilorin Chapel of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Mr Tijani Adewoyin, said that the Chapel is delighted that one of its founding fathers has been duly recognised by his ancestral community.
Mr Adewoyin, who described the Akogun-elect as a humane and industrious leader, said that he was sure that Mr Akogun’s excellent profile would impact positively on the entire Oke-Ode community.
The duo wished Mr Akogun a very long, peaceful and successful reign.
