Faculty of Vet. Medicine holds ‘Heart-to-Heart Talk’ with students

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, in collaboration with the Unilorin Counseling and Human Development Centre, has held the second edition of its interactive student-focused programme, tagged ‘Heart-to-Heart Talk’.

The event, which was held last Wednesday (April 9, 2025) at the Lecture Theatre of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, brought together students and seasoned professionals from various units within the University for an open dialogue on pressing student welfare issues.

In her welcome address, the Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Mistura Oyebisi Azeez, expressed delight at the continuity of the initiative.

She emphasised the importance of creating safe spaces where students can freely engage with professionals on issues that affect their mental, emotional, and academic well-being.

Prof. Azeez reiterated the Faculty’s commitment to supporting students beyond academics, highlighting that true success is only achievable when the mind and body are in harmony.

Speaking on Mental Health, Substance Abuse, and Suicidal Thoughts, Dr Monsur Olalekan Awodun of the Department of Behavioural Sciences provided insightful guidance on the growing mental health challenges faced by youths.

He noted that high academic expectations, peer pressure, and social isolation are among the factors triggering emotional distress among students, sometimes leading to harmful coping mechanisms such as substance abuse.

Dr Awodun further encouraged students to seek help and utilise the mental health support services available within the University.

He emphasised that asking for help is not a sign of weakness, but a step towards healing and strength. He also called on lecturers and peers to be more empathetic and observant, offering support and referral where necessary.

The Director of the Centre for Gender Studies, Prof. Patricia Omojasola, in her lecture, titled “Sexual Harassment in the Academic Environment from a Gender Perspective”, highlighted the often-overlooked gender dynamics that fuels harassment in higher institutions and urged both staff and students to understand and respect boundaries.

Prof. Omojasola also shared strategies for identifying and reporting harassment, stressing the importance of courage and institutional support in addressing these issues. She called on members of the University community to uphold dignity, equality, and professionalism in all their interactions, assuring students of the University’s zero-tolerance for any form of harassment.

Dr Amoloye from the University Health Services discussed “Hormonal Imbalance in Females and Prostate Health in Males”, noting that these are often neglected topics among young adults.

She explained how hormonal fluctuations in females could affect mood, metabolism, and reproductive health, while also highlighting the importance of early detection and lifestyle changes.

On the issue of prostate health, Dr Amoloye encouraged male students to prioritise their health and not shy away from medical checkups. She pointed out that although prostate conditions are more common with age, early signs can be detected and managed, especially with proper education and preventive care.

The discussion on “Examination Malpractice and Dress Code” was led by Mr Ajiboye from the Guidance and Counselling Unit. He underscored the dangers of engaging in malpractice, noting how it undermines the value of academic achievement and can ruin students’ futures.

On the issue of dress code, Mr Ajiboye reminded students that their appearance reflects their identity and the University they represent. He urged students to embrace decency and discipline, which are core values the University upholds.

He also assured students that the dress code policy is not to infringe on their freedom, but to promote a respectful and focused learning environment.

A major highlight of the event was the interactive questions and answers segment where students were given the opportunity to ask questions and answers provided.

Among the dignitaries that attended the programme were Prof. Suleiman Olawoye Salami of the Department of Veterinary Anatomy, as well as several other staff and students of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.
