Faculty of Education hosts workshop on work ethics and career success

As part of its staff development efforts, the Faculty of Education, University of Ilorin, has organised an in-house capacity-building workshop for newly employed academics and Level Advisers.

 Addressing participants at the workshop held penultimate Friday (January 31, 2025), the Dean of the Faculty, Prof Yahya Lásièlé, said that the workshop aimed to acquaint new academic staff with the University rules and regulations, as well as work ethics in general.

Three distinguished academics served as resource persons: Prof. R. A. Lawal, a former Dean of the Faculty and former Vice Chancellor of the University of Offa; Prof. Irene A. Dúrósaró, a former Director of the Unilorin Counselling and Human Development Centre; and Dr. Alex M. Akanmu, Acting . Dean of the Student Affairs Unit.

In his presentation, titled “Dimension of Student Advisement as Threshold of Academic Leadership,” Prof. Lawal emphasised the need for guidance, support, and mentorship for students.

Prof. Lawal, who is also a former Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) of the University, identified the benefits of effective student advisement, which include improved academic performance and emotional stability.

On her part, Prof. Dúrósaró shared what she called the “Ten Golden Rules of Becoming a Successful Academic,” highlighting the importance of setting clear goals, developing a strong work ethic, and maintaining integrity.

In his own presentation, Dr. Akanmu supported the earlier presentations by emphasising the need to avoid misconduct.

He encouraged participants to maintain academic honesty, be punctual, and take responsibility for their actions. The programme was attended by a former Dean of Education Prof. M. O. Yusuf; the Sub-Dean, Dr D. J. Kayode; Heads of the various Departments, the Faculty Officer, Mrs Ebun Osagbemi; the Faculty Accountant, Mrs O. K. Omeiza; and other faculty members.
