Fac. of Education hosts seminar on fitness and recreational exercise

The Faculty of Education, University of Ilorin, has organised a seminar titled “Keep Fit and Recreational Exercise 2025, to emphasise the importance of physical and mental well-being among educators and students.

The event, held penultimate Thursday (March, 27, 2025) at the Education Lecture Theatre (EDLT), brought together academics, health professionals, and students to discuss the significance of fitness and recreational activities in enhancing overall productivity and well-being.

In his opening remarks, the Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Lasiele Alabi Yahaya, underscored the need for educators to prioritise their health, noting that “academic responsibilities often take precedence over personal wellness, a trend that must change.”

Prof. Yahaya added that the programme is not just another lecture or seminar, but a wake-up call, for a moment of reflection, and, more importantly, a call to action.

The Convener of the seminar, Dr Rofiat Dauda Olajide, said that fitness is not just about appearance but a key component of mental clarity, stress reduction, and overall productivity.

According to her, “it is essential that we change our mindset towards exercise. It is not a luxury but a necessity. Be it a simple stretch, a short walk, or structured workout routines, the goal is to stay active and maintain balance.”

Dr Olajide commended the organising committee, the guest speakers, and all attendees, emphasising that fitness should be an institutional priority rather than an individual responsibility.

She expressed optimism that the seminar would serve as a catalyst for a culture of fitness within the University and beyond.

The first Keynote Speaker, Dr Adijat Mojisola Abdulraheem of the Department of Health Promotion and Environmental Health Education, said that the aim of the seminar was to promote fitness in a way that also benefits the environment.

She pointed out the challenges of implementing the initiative, including limited green spaces, insufficient infrastructure, and policy gaps. To counter these challenges, she proposed solutions such as eco-friendly fitness facilities, student-led conservation projects, and the introduction of solar-powered fitness equipment on campus.

The second presentation was made by Dr M. G. Aina of the Department of Human Kinetics Education, who emphasised the practical steps to integrate fitness into daily routines.

He noted that many professionals neglect their health due to busy schedules, leading to increased stress and health-related issues.

Among dignitaries at the Seminar were the Director of Sports, University of Ilorin, Prof. Tajudeen Olarewaju Ibraheem; the immediate past Director of Sports, of the University, Prof. Olufunmilola Dominic; Prof. Olukunmi Lanre Olaitan, Prof. A. A. Sanusi, Prof. S. O. Oniyangi, Dr M. T. Akanbi, as well as staff and students of the Faculty.
