Encomiums galore as Olajide bows out of UNILORIN

It was a rain of glowing tributes last Tuesday (March 17, 2026) as a former member of the Editorial Board of UNILORIN Bulletin, and Professor of English Education, Oba Stephen Billy Olajide, marked his 70th birthday and retirement from the services of the University of Ilorin after decades of distinguished career characterised by scholarship and mentorship.
The ceremony, which was held at the Faculty of Education Lecture Theatre, was organised by Prof. Olajide’s Ph. D. and Master’s supervisees, and mentees. The event also featured the launch of a festschrift, titled “Language Pedagogy, Literacy, Curriculum Development and Implementation”, in appreciation of his immense contributions to learning.
In his address, the Chairman of the Planning Committee, Prof. Rasaq Ayodeji Iliyas, described the occasion as a moment of deep reflection on the legacy the honouree leaves behind as he transitions into retirement.
Prof. Ilyas noted that beyond being an accomplished academic, Prof.Olajide had served as a guide, mentor, and enduring source of inspiration.
“For many of us, he was more than a lecturer. He offered rare lessons beyond the classroom and shaped our lives in ways that cannot be quantified,” he added.
Prof. Ilyas, who teaches at the University of Abuja, described Prof. Olajide as an impactful figure known for his honesty, detribalised dispositions, humility, and compassion.
According to him, these qualities have earned the honouree widespread admiration, not only for his intellectual depth but also for his integrity and warm relationship with people from all walks of life. He prayed that God should grant Prof. Olajide continued wisdom and strength as he embarks on a new phase of service to humanity.
Earlier in his remarks, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, praised Prof. Olajide for his humanity and interpersonal warmth. He noted that the presence of well-wishers who travelled from far and near to honour him was a testament to the deep relationships he cultivated over the years.
Prof Egbewole added that Prof. Olajide relates with people first as a human being, adding that ‘‘the outpouring of love here today shows he is much more than a colleague or friend that doesn’t burn bridges but build them’’.
He further prayed that Prof. Olajide’s wealth of knowledge would continue to benefit humanity, that his days would be filled with joy and fulfillment, and that his legacy would remain a guiding light for generations of scholars and students.
In his goodwill message, the Vice Chancellor of Al-Hikmah University, Prof. Lateef Folorunsho Oladimeji, described the event not only as a farewell but as a celebration of enduring impact. He offered prayers for the celebrant, asking God to grant him long life, sound health, and peace in the years ahead.
Also speaking, the Dean of the Faculty of Education, Prof. Olukunmi Lanre Olaitan, described Prof. Olajide as a pillar of the Faculty whose contributions have left an indelible mark on its growth and academic excellence. He noted that the celebrant’s commitment to scholarship, mentorship, and institutional development has shaped countless careers and strengthened the reputation of the Faculty.
The Dean added that while his retirement marks the end of an era, Prof. Olajide’s legacy will continue to inspire both staff and students, praying that his post-retirement years be filled with continued relevance, fulfillment, and impactful engagements.
Reviewing the festschrift, Prof. Taofiq Alabi from the Department of English, University of Ilorin, commended the depth and scholarly richness of the publication, describing it as a fitting tribute to a distinguished academic of Prof. Olajide’s stature. He noted that the collection of essays reflects critical issues in language pedagogy, literacy, and curriculum development, while also showcasing the far-reaching influence of the celebrant on his students and colleagues.
Prof. Alabi added that the work not only honours Prof. Olajide’s legacy but also serves as a valuable resource for researchers, educators, and policymakers in the field of education.
Responding, Prof. Olajide, who is also the Olola of Olla in Isin Local Government Area of Kwara State, expressed deep appreciation to his students, mentees, and academic associates for the honour bestowed on him, describing the celebration and festschrift as overwhelming gestures of love and recognition.
He noted that his greatest pride lies in seeing his students grow and excel, adding that the impact they continue to make in society remains his most fulfilling achievement. He thanked them for their sacrifices, kind words, and commitment, stressing that the relationships built beyond the classroom are what he cherishes most.
Prof. Olajide prayed for their continued success and urged them to remain worthy ambassadors of the values they have shared, as he steps into a new phase of life with gratitude and joy.
