The immediate past Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), University of Ilorin, Prof. Olubunmi Abayomi Omotesho, has urged lecturers to embrace academic culture in the discharge of their responsibilities to achieve optimal outcomes, particularly career progression.
Prof. Omotesho gave the charge last Monday (October 6, 2025) while speaking at a Workshop on Level Advisement and Academic Culture organised by the Faculty of Life Science at the Faculty of Physical Sciences Boardroom.
In his presentation, Prof. Omotesho emphasised that the roles of Level Advisers in any Faculty are crucial, noting that they play vital roles in guiding students to excel in their careers. He outlined the qualities of a good Level Adviser as including punctuality, constant consultation, good listening skills, equity, and personal integrity.
Prof. Omotesho advised students to familiarise themselves with their Level Advisers, adhere to their instructions, pay school fees on time, and complete registrations as scheduled.
He stressed that Level Advisers guide students in course selection, subject to approval of the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic).
He noted that Level Advisers are expected to guide students through their academic journey, provide academic excellence, and demonstrate integrity, justice, commitment, and teamwork, emphasising that academic culture encompasses shared values with adequate commitments.
He also called on lecturers to always provide clear advice to the students, create a general WhatsApp platform to reach out to them with useful and correct information, and avoid dominating conversations with them, as it could be counterproductive.
The Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Rotimi Olusanya Arise, thanked Prof. Omotesho for his insightful lecture and contributions, which, he said, would enhance the Faculty’s responsibilities and achieve greater success.
The Director of the Centre for Computer Services and Information Technology (COMSIT), Prof. Rasheed Gbenga Jimoh, represented by a System Analyst at the Directorate, Mr Bakare Ridwan, advised students to study diligently and reach out to their Level Advisers whenever they encounter challenges in their academic activities.
He commended the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, for his visionary leadership and commitment to the University’s digital transformation.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Faculty Mentorship Committee, Prof. M. O. Nafiu, appreciated the Dean for the opportunity to gain innovative knowledge, ideas, and techniques in dealing with students. He commended Prof. Omotosho for his excellent lecture and participants for their attention.
