The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has called on the institution’s security personnel to ensure tighter security on campus.
Prof. Egbewole made the call last Monday (December 16, 2024) while declaring open a five-day training for staff of the University Security Division at the Multipurpose Hall of the University.
The Vice Chancellor, who explained the importance of the ongoing fitness and training programme in enhancing the capacity of the security team to handle their duties effectively, said that the programme was aimed at broadening their knowledge and providing them with better exposure to tackle their various assignments.
He emphasised that conducting such exercises quarterly would improve the overall efficiency and preparedness of the security team.
“At the end of the exercise, report of individual’s performance and fitness levels of the participants will be assessed to ensure readiness for security tasks”, he added.
Prof. Egbewole reiterated the need for consistent physical fitness to meet challenges effectively, noting that the training initiative represents a step forward in addressing campus security issues.
The Vice Chancellor expressed appreciation to the Nigerian Army, the Nigerian Police Force, the Department of State Security, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Federal Road Safety Corps, University Fire Services, and the Campus Security Professionals Forum from FUTA, for the collaboration and support through their experience sharing and training for the University security staff.
In his remarks, the Acting Director of the Security Division, University of Ilorin, Mr Paul Bamidele Ogidi, assured staff, students, and stakeholders that their safety and property protection are their top priorities.
Speaking with UNILORIN Bulletin on the training, Mr Ogidi said that it goes beyond parades but focuses on comprehensive security training for all security operatives.
The University Security Chief explained that the training aims at enhancing the productivity of security personnel, expanding their knowledge base, and add value to their operations with innovative ideas.
He, however, added that the University management has added new security personnel to the vigilante groups and legions to ensure safety of members of the University community.
Mr Ogidi commended the University management for revisiting the security initiatives, last implemented in 2017, to improve campus security.
He equally appreciated the concerted efforts of all security personnel that participated in the training.
Highlights of the workshop included daily physical exercise led by the men of the Nigerian Armed Forces; lectures on security consciousness, and issuance of certificates to deserving participants, among others.
