Egbewole urges Medical graduates to uphold professionalism

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has urged newly inducted medical doctors to uphold professionalism and excellence in their practice.

Prof. Egbewole gave the charge last Thursday (January 30, 2025) at the 39th Induction Ceremony for the18 Batch B Class of 2022 medical graduates from the College of Health Sciences. The event, held at the University Auditorium Basement, marked the official entry of the graduates into the medical profession.

The Vice Chancellor, who was represented on the occasion by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Management Services), Prof. Adegboyega Adisa Fawole, emphasised that medical professionals should earn respect through their competence rather than demand it.

He also reminded the inductees that their certificates are not just proof of knowledge but also a reflection of their character.

Prof. Egbewole encouraged the new doctors to give back to their alma mater and contribute to the medical field with dedication and integrity. He extended his congratulations to the inductees, their families, and the organising committee for making the event a success.

In his address, the Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Prof. B.S. Alabi, represented by the Dean of the Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences, Prof. A.A. Akanbi II, commended the graduates for their perseverance despite the challenges they faced during their training.

 He advised them to maintain good character, respect colleagues, and handle patients with care and professionalism.

Prof. Alabi also expressed appreciation to the Vice Chancellor for his commitment to improving the College of Health Sciences and creating a conducive learning environment.

In her address, the Registrar of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), Dr Fatima Kyari, who was represented by the Deputy Registrar, Dr Enejo Abu, urged the inductees to abide by the ethical codes of the medical profession.

 She highlighted the growing role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare and advised the graduates to learn how to utilise AI responsibly.

Dr Kyari also warned against the rising number of quack doctors and urged the new medical professionals to distinguish themselves through ethical and professional conduct.

The event was attended by several dignitaries, including the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Moji Taibat Bakare-Odunola; the Deputy Vice Chancellor (RTI), Prof. M. Etudaiye; the Registrar, Mr M.A. Alfanla; the Bursar, Mr Biodun Lawal; the University Librarian, Prof. K.T. Omopupa; the Dean, Faculty of Clinical Sciences, Prof. Lukman Olajide Abdur-Rahman, the Dean, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, Prof. M.S. Ajao; the Finance Controller of the College of Health Sciences, Mr Abdulganiyu Olaniyan; the Chairperson of the event, Prof. Aishat O. Bolakale, and the Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Kwara State branch, Prof. A.O. Afolabi, among others.
