
Egbewole hails Unilorites on Workers’ Day

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has urged international students to adhere strictly to the Institution’s rules and regulations for a smooth academic journey.
Prof. Egbewole made this appeal last Monday (January 27, 2025) during the 12th Orientation Programme for newly admitted international students organised by the Centre for International Education (CIE) at the University Auditorium.
The event was themed “Unilorin Students and Prospects in Internationalisation: Empowering Students to Thrive in a Globalised World.”
The Vice Chancellor, who was represented by the Dean of the Postgraduate School, Prof. B. V. Owoyele, highlighted UNILORIN’s long standing reputation for discipline and academic excellence, noting that the University has consistently opened its doors to international students.
Pointing out that the University has produced global citizens excelling in various fields across the world, Prof. Egbewole, who also chaired the occasion, commended the CIE for organising the orientation programme to familiarise international students with the University’s guidelines.
In her lecture at the event, the Guest Speaker, Prof. Bola Simeon Fayomi of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, spoke on the benefits of internationalisation in higher education.
She emphasised how cross-cultural knowledge and academic collaborations can enhance educational quality, cultural diversity, global competitiveness, and institutional rankings.
Prof. Fayomi urged African students to value their potentials, collaborate, and work towards building their nations instead of depending on foreign countries.
In his welcome address, the Director of the Centre for International Education(CIE), Prof. Lateef Ibrahim Onireti, congratulated the new international students on gaining admission to the “Better by Far” University.
He encouraged them to integrate academically and socially into their new environment and challenged all students to think beyond borders.
Prof. Onireti also commended participants of the X-Culture programme for their innovative and collaborative efforts, noting the programme’s role in equipping students with international business consulting skills.
On his part, the Ag.Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Alex Akanmu, advised the international students to maintain discipline, attend classes, dress appropriately, and adhere to the University’s rules and regulations.
Dr Akanmu stressed the importance of focus and hard work, reminding the students that “the journey may seem long but will be worth it in the end.”
In his remarks,the Director of the Centre for Peace and Strategic Studies(CPSS), Prof. Ibrahim Jawondo, appreciated the CIE Director, Prof. Onireti for making use of his knowledge for humanity. ‘‘You can’t give what you don’t have”, he said.
Dr Jawondo advised the newly admitted international students to make sure they know the reason why they came to the University of Ilorin, Nigeria, to study.
