The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has commended members of the outgoing Executive Council of the institution’s Students Union for aligning their actions with the University’s developmental vision, particularly through the delivery of quality outdoor smart relaxation and study area facilities.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony of the project last Friday (July 4, 2025) at both the main campus and at the College of Health Sciences, Prof. Egbewole described the initiative as “visionary and exemplary,” noting that it reflects the innovative spirit that the University seeks to instill in all its students.

Prof. Egbewole added that the project resonates deeply with the University’s strategic goal of fostering a student-centred, tech-driven, and environmentally conscious campus.

“The students have shown us that innovation is not limited by age or office”, Prof. Egbewole stated, adding that “They have redefined the meaning of leadership by doing something that serves others beyond their tenure.”

In his remarks, the Ag. Dean of Student Affairs, University of Ilorin, Dr Alex Akanmu, said the project, powered by solar energy, is designed to serve as multi-purpose hub where students can read, relax, charge their devices, and engage in peer learning, even during off-peak power periods.

He added that the initiative, which also promotes environmental sustainability, features shaded seating arrangements, solar charging ports, and energy-efficient lighting transforming the space into what many have described as a “mini innovation village.”

The outgoing President of the Students Union, Mr Victor O. Agezeh, said that the project was conceived as a legacy to enhance student welfare and academic convenience across faculties.

Mr Agezeh described the project as “a thank-you gift to the student community and the administration that supported our dreams.”

Also speaking, the Director of the Physical Planning Unit, Mr AbdulRahman Toyin Jimoh, commended Mr Agezeh-led Students Union for successfully conceptualising and executing the 170-seat outdoor project with precision and foresight.

Mr Jimoh, who is a Quantity Surveyor, described the initiative as a testament to what strategic student-administration collaboration can achieve.

He added that the project aligns with the University’s broader vision of infrastructural innovation and sustainability, saying that it is not just a relaxation spot but also a functional and energy-efficient space that addresses the real needs of students.”

The Chief Executive Officer of St. Rina Creamery & Confectionery Limited, Mr Charles Obijiaku, lauded the efforts of the outgoing Students Union’s executives and pledged to support the project with a smart television and a Radio set so they can listen to the UNILORIN 89.3FM while relaxing.

The event was attended by several dignitaries including the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Moji Taibat Bakare-Odunola; the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Management Services), Prof. Adegboyega Adisa Fawole; the Registrar, Mr Mansur Adeleke Alfanla; the Bursar, Mr Abiodun Lawal; and the University Libarian, Prof. Kamaldeen Tunde Omopupa; as well as the Director, Health Services, Dr Rasheed Adekeye Odunola; among others.
