Egbewole graces Malami Ubandoma of Ilorin’s turbaning

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, was among several dignitaries from far and near that witnessed the turbaning of a prominent Islamic scholar and one of the Imams of the National Mosque of Nigeria, Dr Abdulkadir Jumuah As-Salman Sholagberu, as the first Malami Ubandoma of Ilorin by the Emir of Ilorin and Chairman, Kwara State Council of Chiefs, Alhaji (Dr) Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, CFR.
The event took place last Friday (January 2, 2026) at the ancient palace of the Emir of Ilorin.
The attendance of the turbaning ceremony by the Vice Chancellor, who is also the Vice President (West Africa), of the Association of African Universities (AAU), was targeted at promoting the existing cordial relationship between the University and the people of its host community.
The University, in pursuit of impacting more vigorously on its host community, established the Centre for Ilorin Studies (CILS) over 15 years ago to ensure the projection and preservation of the intellectual and cultural heritage of the people of the Ilorin Emirate and its environs.
Speaking with UNILORIN Bulletin on the sideline of the event, the Chairman of the Central Planning Committee of the ceremony, Dr Salihu Ahmed, commended Prof. Egbewole for his community friendly disposition.
Dr Ahmed, a retired Permanent Secretary in the Kwara State Civil Service and an alumnus of the University, said that honouring invitations to community-related events would enhance the fraternity between the University and the Ilorin Emirate.
Among other dignitaries that attended the ceremony were the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Alhaji Muhammad Saad Abubakar, III, CFR, who was represented by the Galadima of Sokoto; the Etsu Nupe and Chairman of the Niger State Council of Chiefs, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar; and many traditional and religious leaders from all over Nigeria.
Also in attendance were the 8th Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin and current Registrar/Chief Executive of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Ishaq Olanrewaju Oloyede, CON; the Vice Chancellor of Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, Prof. Lateef Folorunsho Oladimeji; the Kuliyan of Ilorin, Prof. Yusuf Olaolu Ali, SAN and the former National Legal Adviser of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr Kamaldeen Ajibade, SAN, among several others.
