As part of efforts targeted at promoting friendship and collaboration between the University of Ilorin and other universities across Kwara State, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, last Thursday(January 8, 2026) led chief executives of sister universities and allied institutions to attend the 15th convocation ceremony of Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin.
The event, which took place at the Atere Campus of the faith-based University, was also attended by the Governor of Kwara State, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, who was represented by his Deputy, Mr Kayode Alabi.
The ceremony was also attended by the Director-General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), Abuja, Prof. Abubakar Olanrewaju Sulaiman; and the Vice Chancellor of the Kwara State University, Malete, Prof. Sheikh Luqman Alade Jimoh, as well as the Balogun Alanamu of Ilorin, who is also an Associate Professor at the Department of Mathematics, University of Ilorin, Dr Usman Atolagbe Abubakar Jos, among several others.
Prof. Egbewole, who is the initiator and Chairman of the Consortium of Kwara Universities (KU8+), has since his assumption of office in October, 2022 been deliberately promoting networking among universities within and outside Kwara State.
The award-winning legal luminary, who is also the Vice-President(West Africa) of the Association of African Universities (AAU) and Secretary-General of the Association of West African Universities (AWAU), has been providing qualitative leadership for his colleagues over the years as he has also welcomed a number of them to the University of Ilorin in the last three years for collaborative efforts.
Speaking on the issue, the Director of Corporate Affairs, University of Ilorin, Mr Kunle Akogun, said that the attendance of Al-Hikmah University’s Convocation Ceremony by Prof. Egbewole was not a coincidence but a deliberate act of encouraging good working relationship between the two universities.
Mr Akogun recalled that Al-Hikmah University was groomed by the University of Ilorin when it was established two decades ago as the first private tertiary educational institution and second University in Kwara State.
The veteran journalist explained that beyond the above, most of those who have headed the private University such as Prof. Musibau Adewumi Akanji, Prof. Rasaq Deremi Abubakar, Prof. Sulyman Age Abdulkareem and Prof. Noah Yusuf, were staff members of the University of Ilorin.
Mr Akogun stated that the attendance of Prof. Egbewole at the event was also to serve as morale-booster to the incumbent Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Lateef Folorunsho Oladimeji, who is also a former national official of the University of Ilorin Alumni Association. He said that it was the first convocation ceremony organised by the administration of the respected UNILORIN alumnus. He also said that the step was also taken as a show of gratitude to the founder of the University, Alhaji (Dr) AbdulRaheem Oladimeji, OFR, who, he said, has been a longstanding friend of the University of Ilorin.
The Director assured Nigerians that Prof. Egbewole and the University of Ilorin would continue to serve as big brothers to other universities within and around Kwara State towards enhancing university education and service delivery among the universities, particularly members of the KU8+.
