The Ag. Director of the Centre for Management and Leadership, University of Ilorin, Dr Adeola Aminat Odebode, has admonished students of the institution to desist from indecent dressing and embrace a culture of discipline, responsibility, and self-respect.
Dr Odebode gave the charge in a chat with UNILORIN BULLETIN last Tuesday (March 31st, 2026) in her office.
The Director expressed concern over what she described as the increasing trend of inappropriate dressing among some students on campus.
While acknowledging the importance of individual freedom of expression, Dr Odebode stressed that such freedom must be exercised within the bounds of decency and the values espoused by the University.
According to her, the University environment is primarily a centre for learning, character formation, and leadership development, and as such, students must reflect these ideals in their appearance.
She said, “Indecent dressing not only distracts from academic focus but also undermines the moral standards and culture that universities are established to uphold.”
Dr Odebode emphasised that how students dress speaks volumes about their personality, level of discipline, and preparedness for future leadership roles.
She noted that the Centre for Management and Leadership strongly believes that leadership begins with personal discipline, which includes dressing responsibly.
She urged the students to see proper dressing not as a restriction, but as a mark of maturity and a demonstration of respect for themselves, their colleagues, and the university community.
The Ag. Director also called on parents, guardians, religious bodies, and the University management to intensify efforts in guiding and counselling students towards positive values.
Dr Odebode reminded the students that they represent the University of Ilorin at all times, adding that their appearance should consistently reflect excellence, responsibility, and the leadership values the institution seeks to instill.
