The Department of Computer Science has emerged winner of the Quiz Category of the Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences (CIS) Inter-Departmental Quiz and Debate Competition held last Monday (April 28, 2025), at the Faculty Lecture Theatre.

It won with a total of 320 points, followed by the Department of Information Technology in the second position with 290 points, and the Department of Mass Communication in the third place with 260 points. The Department of Telecommunication Science secured the fourth position with 140 points, while the Department of Library and Information Science came fifth with 50 points.

In the Public Speaking contest, Peace Comfort Atere from the Department of Mass Communication emerged the champion, followed by Peace Roberts of the Information Technology Department in the second position, and Amuleya Rachel of the Department of Mass Communication in the third place.

The champions in the Debate category were David Adesina and Peace Roberts, both of the Department of Information Technology.

Earlier in his remarks, the Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Lukman A. Azeez, expressed delight at the large turnout, noting that it was an improvement on the first edition. He said that due to the low turnout in the first edition, he had concluded that this intellectual programme must be repeated. He stressed that the essence of this edition is to select someone who will represent the Faculty at the University level and probably progress to national and international levels. “That is our belief; we should be able to get a Faculty representative that will outperform other competitors in the University,” he said.

Prof. Azeez, who described the competition as a well-recognised talent hunt in the University community, added that it will serve as motivation for others in subsequent years.

He appreciated the Matron of the Debate Community, Dr Ganiyat B. Balogun, for her pivotal role in the success of the event and acknowledged the support of staff members from the Department of Mass Communication and other Faculty staff.

The Dean advised students to engage fully in the intellectual activities, emphasising their value in acquiring knowledge.

In her remarks, Dr Balogun,  said she was impressed with the turnout, stressing that the competition would enhance students’ mental and social skills and provide them with an opportunity to showcase their specialisation, potentially leading to better job prospects.

The highlight of the event included the presentation of awards certificates to the Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Azeez, and the Matron of the Debate Community, Dr Balogun, in appreciation of their unwavering commitments and contributions to the Faculty. Other departmental winners of the competition were also presented certificates.
