Chaplain charges religious leaders to preach ‘Salvation’

As the Lent fasting period progresses, a Chaplain at the Chapel of Light, University of Ilorin,  Dr Jacob Olasupo Osaj, has urged all religious leaders to shift their focus from preaching prosperity to salvation.

Dr Osaji, who made this call last Tuesday (March 25, 2025) while featuring on a popular Yoruba programme, “Oro to n lo,” on UNILORIN FM radio, said this period of fasting and spiritual reflection should be utilised for total supplication and rejuvenation.

The Cleric-don, who is also a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Religions, University of Ilorin, emphasised the importance of emulating Jesus Christ, who fasted for 40 days and nights, as recorded in the Bible (Luke 4:1-2). He said that Christians must follow Jesus’ example and observe the Lent fasting period with sincerity and devotion.

Dr Osaji cautioned that fasting must be accompanied by prayers, purity, sinlessness, faithfulness, and focus on God. He also advised Christians to maintain their work ethic and moral uprightness during and after the fasting period.

Dr. Osaji noted that the coincidence of Lent and Ramadan fasting this year underscores the unity of purpose between Christians and Muslims, emphasising that God is one and desires unity among all people.

He encouraged both Muslims and Christians to come together and pray for Nigeria, stressing that prayers can achieve remarkable results.

Dr. Osaji further admonished those engaging in sinful activities such as kidnapping, ritualism, and robbery to repent and make restitution during this holy month.

He attributed the peaceful atmosphere in the University of Ilorin to religious harmony, prayers, purposeful leadership, and academic excellence.

The cleric expressed pride in the achievements of graduates from the Department of Religions, University of Ilorin, noting that many of them had excelled in various fields locally and internationally.

He encouraged leaders and followers in Nigeria to turn to God, seek forgiveness, and emulate the example of the Israelites, who received God’s mercy after repenting from their sins.
