The Director of the University of Ilorin Centre for Cybersecurity and Sustainable Development, Dr Lukman Olawoyin, has described the establishment of the Centre as one of the visionary initiatives of the Administration of Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN.
Dr Olawoyin, who stated this last Monday (May 26, 2025) while participating in a UNILORIN FM current affairs programme, ‘Table Talk’, anchored by the Station’s Head of Programmes, Mr Temitope Olawuyi (Karikatalk), commended the Vice Chancellor for taking a significant step towards promoting cybersecurity and sustainable development.
The Director emphasised the importance of funding research in Cyber security and Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields.
Dr Olawoyin shared valuable insights into the Centre’s mandate, which includes conducting cutting-edge research, addressing cybercrime challenges, and promoting cybersecurity studies, research, and innovations.
He also highlighted the Centre’s role in enlightening citizens on online safety, particularly when clicking links and verifying website authenticity.
The Director said that the Centre offers various academic programmes, including PhD and Master degrees, as well as professional certificate courses, designed to equip students with the skills needed to combat cyber threats.
Dr Olawoyin encouraged Nigerians to take advantage of these programmes. He stressed the need for government funding to support research in cybersecurity and STEM.
He pointed out that as the world becomes increasingly dependent on technology, the importance of cybersecurity cannot be overstated.
He described the University of Ilorin’s Centre for Cyber Security and Sustainable Development as a beacon of hope for a safer digital future, adding that its initiatives are poised to make a significant impact in the fight against cybercrime.
