National Centre for Hydropower Research and Development (NACHRED)

About National Centre for Hydropower Research and Development (NACHRED)

VISION
A world class centre for the advancement of knowledge in hydropower technology and management.

MISSION
To conduct research and training that will enhance the development and application of hydropower as an important component of diverse energy sources that is needed for a stable and reliable energy sector in Nigeria.

BACKGROUND
The total installed power generating capacity in Nigeria presently is just 6000MW. There are three major hydro stations (Kainji, Jebba and Shiroro) with total capacity of 1900MW. There are seven other major prospective hydro stations (Zungeru, Mambilla, Makurdi, Lokoja, Onitsha, Ikom, and Gurara) with estimated capacity of 10,000MW. In addition, the estimated potential of small hydro power is over 700MW. Nigeria energy target is 50,000MW by 2020; and hydro energy can meet a substantial portion of the nation’s energy needs, if it is properly harnessed. The Federal Government of Nigeria in realisation of the potential of hydropower in meeting the energy needs of the country has now established the National Centre for Hydropower Research and Development (NACHRED). The Centre is located at the University of Ilorin, in North Central Nigeria.
