A Deputy Director at the Counselling and Human Development Centre, University of Ilorin, Dr Aminullahi Salman Alawaye, has urged new students of the institution to learn the university’s rules, utilise available support systems, and engage in campus life to ensure a successful and balanced academic journey.
Dr Alawaye gave this advice last Monday (October 6, 2025) during the “Meet the Counselor”, a weekly counselling programme of UNILORIN 89.3 FM. The programme was anchored by Mrs Idayat Hassan.
The guest explained that knowing the rules would empower individuals to avoid unnecessary pitfalls and focus on their growth as he said that ignorance would never be taken as an excuse.
Addressing the need for a robust support system, the Deputy Director outlined the network of help available to students, including course advisors for academic issues, the University Health Centre, the Dean of Student Affairs’ office, and the Counselling and Human Development Centre, for psychological and emotional support.
“Seeking help is a sign of strength and self-awareness, not weakness,” Dr Alawaye noted as he reassured students who might feel stigmatised about seeking counselling. “You see a doctor for a physical cough, you see a counsellor for emotional or mental distress.”
On the value of extracurricular activities, Dr Alawaye pointed out that student organisations are crucial for developing the soft skills employers seek. He advised students to follow their passions and start with one or two clubs to avoid burnout while building meaningful networks and experiences.
“Your degree will get you the interview, but your soft skills leadership, teamwork, communication often get you the job. These are honed outside the classroom,” he counseled.
Responding to a listener’s question on confidentiality, Dr Alawaye firmly assured members of the university community that it is the cornerstone of counselling services, guiding students through reporting processes with their safety and consent as the top priority.
Dr Alawaye, therefore, called on students to be intentional in exploring all the opportunities the university offers, reminding them that the institution is structured for their holistic development and success.
