Avoid bush burning around premises, Unilorites counselled
By Abubakar Imam
The Head of the University of Ilorin Fire Service Unit, Mr AbdulRasaq Ibrahim, has advised members of the University community and the general public to avoid bush burning around their premises.
Mr Ibrahim gave this advice last Wednesday (February 4, 2026) while speaking with UNILORIN Bulletin in his office.
He explained that the advice is informed by the need to ensure the protection of their lives and property.
Mr Ibrahim said that the harmattan season is a period when a little fire could turn into serious accidents that can destroy life and property and also lead to permanent injuries.
He added that where it is necessary to set a particular item or space on fire such things and places should be monitored in the course of the combustion to ensure that the fire does not go beyond the level expected.
Mr Ibrahim also advised staff and students to ensure that they switchoff electric appliances when not needed, particularly while closing from their offices, laboratories and classrooms.
He said that upsurge in electricity sometimes leads to fire incidents as he said that the possibility of such would be prevented once those appliances are disconnected from sources of power.
He also advised members of the University community to ensure that they have functional fires extinguishers in their cars, offices and residences to ensure that accidental fires are put off with ease.
Mr Ibrahim thanked the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, for his support to the University Fire Service Unit.
He added that the support his Unit received from the management has positioned it to discharge its responsibilities effectively.
